COMMONBOND FOUNDATION ENGLISH CAMP July 2011
Since 2001, CommonBond's English Camp, directed
by Ms. Anna Pier, has offered a three week summer camp designed to provide English learners an opportunity to expand
their knowledge while developing their English language skills, using science, math and games. And tennis is one of
those games. This July the children from English Camp, along with
SVTA Teaching
Pro Jordan
Walker, SVTA Mentors Barbara and Swede Thoreson, together with SVTA volunteers Mary Oswald, Pam Vetrano and Ann Weeks, once
again participated in the English Camp Tennis Program at Larson Park. It is because of the continuing support
of Kiwanis and Rotary of Sonoma and the generous donations of our SVTA members,
that SVTA is able to participate as sponsors in this exciting community program.

In January 2011, USTA NorCal honored SVTA as the Outstanding Community Tennis
Association.
This “Outstanding” category award was the only one in the group of Community Tennis in the ACES (Awards
Celebrating Excellence in Service) program. USTA NorCal honors those who work to
promote and develop the game of tennis. Particularly noteworthy
for SVTA were the programs in Junior Tennis and the CommonBond Foundation
English Camp designed for English learners (both partially supported by Kiwanis
and Rotary of Sonoma) and the Quick Start Program (encouraged by the USTA). Over 700 Sonoma Valley
youth have participated in these programs. Above: Judy Muller and NorCal Michelle Skipworth Nearly 150 USTA NorCal members gathered for an elegant
awards luncheon in the vineyard setting of Casa Real at Ruby Hill Winery in Pleasanton.
Legendary Stanford University Tennis Coach Dick Gould, who emceed, praised the attendees
for their dedication to the sport and for giving back to their tennis communities.
Representing SVTA, Board Member Judy Muller received the Outstanding Community award from Steve Leube, USTA
NorCal Executive Director, and special praise from Coach Gould. USTA
Community Tennis Coordinator Michelle Skipworth nominated SVTA for the award
and has given valuable professional program help. The success of SVTA programs for diverse
youth and adults would not be possible without the hundreds of local tennis volunteers.
